PogoGirl, planned for release on 10th of February, 2023 to PC Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch, priced at $4.99 / €4.99.

Isn’t She lovely?

PogoGirl is a pogo champion living on Pogo Island. She’s fun-loving, happy and easy-going but one fateful night, her favourite pogo stick is stolen from its case. Distressed, Pogo Girl grabs a spare pogo stick and gives chase, bouncing after the thief throughout the night and day – across the whole island in order to get her treasure back and strive to do the right thing by helping others. So the exciting adventure begins and an impressive challenge unfolds.

Straight to the Point

Go! Go! PogoGirl takes place across the four seasons, with each season comprising four levels plus a boss level.

Four Seasons

The developer commented, ‘The season theme was chosen to imply that the game takes place over a long stretch of time, as PogoGirl is hunting down the thief who stole her favourite pogo stick. The time of day within the seasons will also change, with the first level of a season taking place in the morning and the boss level taking place at night.’

Clever design work is implemented in such a way that players can find good routes for speed-running and things are never that easy. Those who want to take their time exploring will find hidden gems behind fake walls and lots more. Exploration is encouraged as care has been taken so that players can freely explore the levels without fear of getting lost! As the game plays check out some of the familiar backdrops, inspired from classic 90s titles. Once you’ve beaten the last boss, an additional bonus world with 5 more levels is unlocked but there is a long way to go before you get to this stage.

More Than Just Jumping

As is familiar for classic 2D platformers, the main goal is just to reach the end of each level. However, the game employs a task system for added challenges. In each level you can achieve three extra goals:

1) Collecting all 100 gems in a level.

2) Finding all 3 hidden gems in a level.

3) Beating the level without dying.

Each of these goals will award players with a pogo medal, and if you collect all the medals in the game (including the bonus levels you unlock after beating it once), you will unlock a low gravity cheat, making PogoGirl bounce super high. Finally, players can also enable a timer in the game to speedrun it.

Winner Takes All

As well as completing all the set levels and going onto unlock additional ones there are lots of other unlockables, surprises on offer. In truth, just like some old school games that have mystery finds and hidden cheats, Go! Go! PogoGirl recreates the excitement of finding secrets you did not expect!

Controlling the Music

Slick and responsive controls are the order of the day and some nice music and sound effects present a stomping-retro experience to be had by all!

“My main goal with this game was to spread that same sort of naive joy I experienced when playing platformers in the 90s. To that end, I did my best to recreate the polish and charm these games had, going so far as to implement actual push-button cheats. Setting the Scene…

Wonderland Nights: White Rabbit’s Diary is intended to be a loose sequel to the events of Alice in Wonderland. Alice experienced a catastrophe that happened years ago, and culminated in the death of the previous Queen of Hearts, mother of the current Queen. In the intervening years the story of her brief jaunt through Wonderland has become more scary and elaborate in the telling, to the point where she becomes a boogie man figure.

The four nations of Wonderland meet every year to agree on shared policies and enact their various schemes against each other. There are personal vendettas to resolve and enchantments hidden everywhere, and did someone mention the dreaded Alice? You are the White Rabbit, and your job is to organise the schedule for the annual summit. Every decision you make affects the destiny of Wonderland!

Will the King of the barbaric desert of Clubs declare active war on the pastoral paradise of Hearts? Will Prince John of the psychedelic land of Spades be able to elope with Princess Julie of the wealthy Diamond nation – two nations that are deadly enemies? What’s up with the King and Queen of Spades’ weird marriage? Does the King of Hearts suspect his loyal Duke Jorge of having an affair with his wife? Explore this and much more as you negotiate the likes and dislikes of the twelve guests of the summit.

1. Is war allowed to take place in the next year?
2. Is magic allowed to be used?
3. Will the nations trade freely, or with taxation?
4. Will the borders between the nations be opened or closed?

There are 16 different political endings to unlock.

But on top of that, there are personal plots between all of the characters that can be unlocked using different combinations of pairings (the way to unlock things is hinted at in the Notes section of the in-game menu, and there is an extensive guide published online).

You are in charge

The White Rabbit is in charge of planning the interactions, and is a bit of a meddler. Sometimes they are dragged into the plotlines by other characters, but oftentimes they must sit by helplessly and watch the consequences of their actions unravel. That can be a bit of an unusual experience for players at first, taking on a role that’s a facilitator rather than someone pursuing direct goals. But every action taken leads to the ultimate ending, which does have direct consequences on the life of White Rabbit.

Stories are unlocked over a series of playthroughs, with the in-game Codex magically remembering things from previous playthroughs for White Rabbit to read. For the most part, White Rabbit watches the proceedings as an unobtrusive observer… a spy, perhaps… and while they do not interrupt the royals and nobles during their activity, they get an opportunity to correct the course of events the next day by choosing how they pair people and activities.

A delightful and addictive setting.

Unbelievable

Gameplay is inspired by various games from the 16-bit era that will be apparent to many gamers but Intrepid Izzy has its own originality and branding. Merging together many favourite gameplay elements and challenges, it offers up a colourful feast of action and exploration! Unbelievably as the developer explained, ‘many themes, characters and enemies in the game were inspired by real life events. For example, meeting someone with an allergy to kiwifruit inspired me to design kiwifruit monsters. The various costumes that Izzy collects to gain special powers are also (loosely) based on real-world examples’.

IDs and Fluidity – HD Art

The characters in Intrepid Izzy are animated using custom-made software which took a lot of time and effort to develop, but gamers will note, it was well worth it. Intrepid Izzy contains thousands of frames of animation, which cannot feasibly be created any other way. Retaining certain characteristics of classic game graphics, evoking a sense of familiarity and/or nostalgia marks this game as a real labour of love.

Grab a reward

Rewards and winning challenges are all part of the experience and most notably, new costumes for Izzy that grant her special powers is high on the priority list. For example, the flying squirrel suit that allows her to glide on air currents. There are also heart fragments to increase Izzy’s maximum health points, maps to help her find stuff, keys that open doors to new areas, coins that she can spend on various upgrades, as well as the arcade games in town, and various quest-related items.
